Arch Linux sound problem in Firefox and amarok
Many of you have probably experienced sound problem in Linux environments, when you use two applications for playing music or video.
A few weeks ago after making a total update for my Arch Linux machine, I noticed that Amarok no longer played music. That is, I decided to install phonon-xine and most gstreamer codecs. I also installed gstreamer0.10-pulse, as I thought it might be helpful.
After installing those packages, I was able to listen to music using Amarok again, but I had a new problem. Whenever I paused a song to watch a video on youtube, firefox wasn't able to play the sound. I had to quit both Amarok and firefox to play the video again which was a big pain in the ass.
Today I found the solution. Gstreamer0.10-pulse is a plugin for the PulseAudio sound server, which was making trouble for me. After removing it using the following command, I am now able to pause music on Amarok and watch videos on youtube, without restarting any application.
